NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar - Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's imprisoned former leader, suffers from low blood pressure symptoms such as dizziness and loss of appetite. However, a medical worker said on Thursday she has been denied treatment at qualified facilities outside the prison system.
Suu Kyi, 78, fell ill late last month after the army seized power from her elected government, according to a medical worker who spoke anonymously.
The Nobel laureate, who has been detained for 27 years, is ill, and the military government has denied requests for an outside physician to see her, according to sources familiar with the situation, who added that a prison department doctor is treating her.
Separately, a military officer who requested anonymity confirmed a BBC Myanmar-language service report that Suu Kyi suffered from a severe toothache that rendered her unable to eat and caused vomiting.
According to the report, the ruling military council's spokesperson, Maj Gen Zaw Min Tun, said Suu Kyi was in good health.
According to a medical worker, Suu Kyi is under the care of a doctor assigned to the capital's main prison, Naypyidaw, who took her blood pressure at least three times a day when she fell ill last month.
She also gets a monthly medical checkup from senior doctors at the military hospital in Naypyidaw.
Not only are details about Suu Kyi's health unknown, but her exact location is also unknown.
Suu Kyi was reportedly transferred from Naypyidaw prison to house arrest as part of the clemency action in late July, but military authorities have not confirmed this.
