DUBLIN, Ireland: Ireland, fearing fuel shortages, is weighing the rationing of fuel, to begin as early as September, according to the Irish Mirror.
Initial plans call for the government to order large energy users, such as data centers, to reduce their usage.
This follows reduced oil supplies resulting from the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Due to Russia supplying large amounts of energy to Europe, especially to countries like Germany and Italy, it has great influence over EU policies.
Meanwhile, an expanding population in Ireland is adding further pressure on existing power supplies.
Irish EU Commissioner Mairead McGuinness has told the Irish Mirror that Euro chiefs are considering fuel rationing as early as this autumn.
"We have to plan. You hear again and again that we don't get our gas or oil etc from Russia, but we're completely reliant on it," said a Irish government source, as told by the Irish Mirror.
"I would say there has been a failure in system planning..There's always been a growth in demand for electricity, by the way the population has grown as well, it's now over five million people," said Don Moore, former managing director at Irish energy provider ESB, as quoted by RTE.
"Power generation is not something you can conjure up in a number of months, it takes a number of years and this could have been anticipated and it obviously wasn't.
"We are dependent widely on gas-fired generation in Ireland and the crisis this winter is more likely to be driven by a shortage of gas."
Meanwhile, EU Commissioner for Financial Controls McGuinness told the Mirror that fuel rationing could be seen in Ireland in autumn.
