WASHINGTON D.C.: The U.S. State Department has called upon Vietnam to release environmental advocate Nguy Thi Khanh, adding that the U.S. was "deeply concerned" by her 17th June sentencing to prison.
In a statement, the State Department said, "The U.S. calls on the government of Vietnam to release Khanh, who has been recognized internationally for her work to advance climate change and sustainable energy issues in Vietnam, as well as other detained environmental activists working for the benefit of Vietnam and its people."
Khanh, who earlier was Vietnam's first recipient of the prestigious Goldman environmental prize, was arrested in February on tax evasion charges. She is also the founder of the Green Innovation and Development Centre.
Khanh has coordinated a campaign for Vietnam to adopt greener energy strategies, at a time when the country is increasing its coal production.
In January, security officials searched her office and home, and documents and devices were confiscated.
