Impulsive collection is an obsession that many people share. There is actually no single reason as to why people do this, but a major cause of it can be an emotional connection. For example, a football fan who collects club memorabilia expresses their loyalty towards the sport by doing so. Some like to collect coins which makes them nostalgic with the memories of the places they have traveled to. In some way or the other, the proclivity to collect different things narrows down to one single reason - emotional connection.
It is observed that majority collect things that remind them about their childhood. Limited edition toys or collectibles are known to be an adult's satisfaction for their nostalgia. Barbie dolls, Pokemon cards, and yellow rubber ducks are a few popular collectibles that are widely sold. While many companies that operated decades ago have shut down, there remains a few that are still producing and bringing back childhood memories, and one of them is Rubba Ducks. This is a renowned company that manufactures more than just classic yellow-colored rubber ducks that many children (now adults) had seen floating around in their bathtubs. The company created character-based rubber ducks and was the first one in the world to do so. The idea for the character-based Rubba Ducks was hatched from the founder, Mark Boldt's then four-year-old daughter Savannah in 1996. A year later, a company named 'The Duck Group, LLC' was formed, and 'Rubba Ducks' was introduced in Boldt's national children's magazine 'Surprises.'
Mark Boldt turned his daughter's innocent idea into a full-fledged business and is now the owner of a company that manufactures and distributes its Rubba Ducks to different countries in the world. Just after the initial launch of the first few Rubba Ducks characters, their sales soared. By 2003, Rubba Ducks was not only selling its unique but character-based rubber ducks in North America but had also had tremendous success in numerous countries throughout Europe, including Germany and the UK. The company, since its inception, has introduced over two hundred and twenty-two characters with unique names and backstories to collect. As their tag line states, 'They're a lot like U and a lot like me' Rubba Ducks are manufacturing their ducks to represent everyone's personality and character from occupations to sports teams, life events, and even holiday seasonal styles. And, more recently they even designed ducks for the Original Cheeshead brand.
Rubba Ducks uses a roto-molding manufacturing technology offering flexibility and precision to facilitate complex contours and a variety of shapes and sizes. Mark Boldt, along with his team of sculptors and tool-makers, oversees the development of new styles and the creation of each mold. The team ensures to produce a smooth and high-quality design of the toy and paint it with lead-free bright, long-lasting colors so that it can be proudly displayed on the shelves.
The popularity of Rubba Ducks increased when celebrities requested for them to be added to the Oscars, CMA's, and Grammy's gift bags. A few celebrities like Britney Spears and Tori Spelling even made requests for specific Rubba Ducks styles to be handed out as welcome gifts at their personal baby showers. The company's creative spin on the classic toy had turned many heads, including Paris Hilton's, who insisted on giving Rubba Ducks as the only souvenir gift to all her guests at her 2007 Las Vegas birthday party. Since their inception, Rubba Ducks have been honored with numerous awards from countries all over the world. Recently, Rubba Ducks received the highly acclaimed Dr. Toy's 'Best Classic' Award in 2015 in Dr. Toy's best classic products program. It also won the 2016 Family Choice Award, recognizing the best in Children's and Parenting products.
Over the years, Rubba Ducks have popularized and grown exponentially. Today its iconic yellow-colored character ducks can be seen in Spencer's, Toys R Us, Kmart, Target Hallmark stores, and Gift Specialty Stores. Overall, its products are distributed to over a thousand different locations in the US and abroad.
Just like Rubba Ducks continues to create more unique styles and products that remind people about their playful days, Lego is another company in the market for decades and is still going strong. The Lego Company creates interlocking bricks that are used to build characters, buildings, and even cities. Their specific brand has excelled to the point it now has its own independent stores in almost every country of the world. Equally impressive, the LEGO Group was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen, and its ownership has passed from father to son and is now owned by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of its original founder.
Considering the success of both remarkable and renowned companies, it is clear that people take their obsessions or secret childhood nostalgia seriously, dedicated to the thrill of obtaining and displaying a cherished collection of collectibles. And it's these thrills from its loyal customers that are the key factors of success for brands like Rubba Ducks and Lego.
