Dublin, Ireland: The Irish Senate has unanimously passed a resolution seeking to expand Dublin's relations with Taipei, and voicing their objections to Beijing's threatening to invade Taiwan.
Also, the resolution urged the Irish government to speak out against continuous violations of human rights in the People's Republic of China, as well as support the freedom and liberties of the people of Taiwan.
Further, the resolution condemned the mistreatment of the Moslem Uyghur population in Xinjiang by Beijing.
The Senate called upon the Irish government to have relations with Taiwan in a manner similar to that followed by most European Union member states, which includes conducting relations through the EU's representative office in Taipei.
The Senate condemned China's efforts to isolate the people and government of Taiwan from participation in international organizations.
The resolution was sponsored by 17 Irish senators.
The Irish Senate passed resolutions concerning Taiwan in 2013 and 2015. Those resolutions sought to urge allowing Taiwan to participate in international organizations, and urging the Irish government to sign an economic cooperation agreement with Taiwan.
Following Wednesday's Senate resolution, Taiwan's representative to Ireland, Yang Tzu-pao thanked the senators for the resolution to develop closer relations between the two countries.
