MOSCOW, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Russia registered 11,699 coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, the highest daily spike since late February, bringing the national tally to 5,167,949, the country's monitoring and response center said Thursday.
The country's COVID-19 death toll stood at 125,278 as another 383 people lost their lives to the virus in the past day, according to official data.
Moscow, Russia's worst-hit region, reported 5,245 new cases, the biggest daily increase since Jan. 15, taking the city's total to 1,214,459.
Despite the recent surge in infections, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Wednesday that the captial city was not planning to impose a new lockdown.
He said the government would continue to urge public compliance with existing measures to prevent the spread of the virus and is prepared to open more hospitals for COVID-19 patients.
