DUBLIN, Ireland: In a bid to reduce claims in personal injury lawsuits, along with insurance costs, judges in Ireland met on Saturday and voted to accept new guidelines for persons seeking claims.
Among the new guidelines is reductions in the size of awards when minor injuries occur, as well as seeking quick settlements to reduce the size of awards for minor injuries and mediate early settlements, and to reduce legal fees and insurance costs.
The 166 members of the country's Judicial Council approved the new guidelines, to replace the Book of Quantum, which previously offered judges guidance in determining the amount of claims awarded.
The new guidelines on claims would lead "to increased numbers of early settlements, and therefore a reduction in the legal costs of both claimants and defendants", noted the judiciary organization.
In preparing Ireland's new guidelines, judges reviewed how claims are awarded in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, where awards are typically lower.
Prior to Saturday's judicial vote, Justice Minister Helen McEntee said on Friday that she sought to ensure the guidelines are quickly put into use.
"This approach will ensure that the law is robust, as we seek to reduce the cost of insurance," she said, as reported by Reuters.
