NEW YORK, New York - U.S. stocks were treading water on Thursday, with investors and traders unwilling to commit to sustained buying or selling.
The Standard and Poor's 500 barely moved, closing just 0.34 of a point or 0.01% higher at 3,094.38.
The Dow Jones industrials lost 22.08 points or 0.08% to close Thursday at 27,761.51.
The Nasdaq Composite retreated 8.02 points or 0.09% to 8,474.08.
The U.S. dollar was softer in the U.S. session reversing earlier gains in Asia. Around the New York close on Thursday the euro was changing hands at 1.1019, after dipping below the 1.10 level in Asia.
The British pound was strongly bid at 1.2876. The Japanese yen rose to 108.43, while the Swiss franc climbed to 0.9879.
The Canadian dollar weakened slightly to 1.3249. The Australian dollar fell to 0.6786. The New Zealand dollar was sharply lower at 0.6368.
The FTSE 100 in London lost 0.80% Thursday. The German Dax was down 0.38%. The Paris-based CAC 40 declined 0.10%.
Stocks were mixed in Asia on Thursday.
In Japan the Nikkei 225 fell 178.32 points or 0.76% to close at 23,141.55.
The Australian All Ordinaries rose 35.20 points or 0.52% to 6,840.80.
In Hong Kong the Hang Seng tumbled 247.77 points or 0.93% to 26,323.69.
China's Shanghai Composite edged up 4.63 points or 0.16% to 2,909.87.
